~Fall of Srivijaya

During the Tang Dynasty of China, Srivijaya acted as the key entrepot port of then Tang China. Srivijaya occupied Indonesia and a small part of the Malay Peninsula too. After several attacks launched on the ports of Srivijaya, it was taken over by the Singhasari Kingdom in 1288, which fell to the Majapahit within 5 years.

~Impact of the Fall of Srivijaya and Rise of Majapahit on Southeast Asian ports

Nothing much actually happened after the Fall of Srivijaya. After the fall of Srivijaya, Temasek then became the key port for China.

-Fall of Tang China to Rise of Song China, and then Yuan China, its effects

Tang China fell to Song and Srivijaya continued trading with them. Srivijaya fell within years and Song fell before it to the Mongols who established the Yuan Dynasty. Yuan Dynasty traded actively with Temasek then Majapahit after Srivijaya’s fall as Temasek had extremely rich goods around its areas. Temasek became a key port for the Yuan Dynasty of China where they secured plenty of valuable goods.

~Sang Nila Utama’s journey to Temasek

Before Yuan China started trading with Temasek, a Palembang and Srivijayan Prince who proposed to sail to Temasek. It quite a turbulent journey as the met a very big storm and he had to throw everything on his ship into the water, including his own jewelled crown into the water before he could sail the ship safely to Temasek. When he reached Temasek, he saw an animal which had orange fur and was big, which was also called a lion back then, so he named the island Singapura, which meant Lion City. He set up Singapura as a port and when the Yuan Dynasty proposed to trade with Singapore, Singapore took up the offer.

~Early Temasek as an active trading port

After Sang Nila Utama founded Singapore in 1299 and when the international trade ban in China was lifted during the Yuan Dynasty, private traders/merchants were allowed to trade with foreigners outside of China. Yuan China became more and more interested in Temasek as it turned out to be the most active in spice trade back then when spices were worth very much and were very expensive. Yuan China encouraged foreign trade, therefore Southeast Asian countries, especially Singapore, prospered.

~Early Temasek’s trade relations with Song and Yuan China

Temasek was an active trading port suitable for trading in Yuan China while the Song Dynasty was active in trade with other countries.

Historical Investigation:

How did the Fall of the Srivijaya Empire and the Rise of the Yuan Dynasty affect Early Singapore (Temasek) in terms of trade?

Answer:

•Srivijaya, which acted as the key entrepôt port of China during the Tang and Song Dynasties, fell when many of its ports were attacked, following an invasion by the Singhasari Kingdom in 1288, before a take ove by the Majapahit.

•By then, the Mongols who had been working with the Song Dynasty to eliminate the Jin, finally succeeded. However, the leader of the Mongols at the time, Kublai Khan betrayed the Song and launched an invasion in the Song which cause Song China to fall and the Yuan Dynasty to rise.

•Srivijaya only fell after the Fall of the Song Dynasty, which meant that after the Fall of Srivijaya, Yuan China needed another key port in which they would trade actively with.

•Yuan China then picked Singapore as its key port because of its strategical and geographical location and also because of its activeness in spice trade with China’s private traders/merchants, when the trade ban with foreigners in China was lifted during the Yuan.

•One of the reasons that Yuan China entered Southeast Asian trade was also because Ancient India was proactive in entering Southeast Asian trade.

•Therefore, I can infer that Early Singapore (Temasek), became a popular and successful port that prospered after the Fall of Srivijaya and the Rise of Yuan Dynasty in China while it actively engaged in trade.

Some parts of the Historical Investigation are just extra information, you do not have to explicitly state about Mongols and how the Song Dynasty fell.
