Why North Korea Will Never Stop Its Nuclear Threat (Or Become Capitalist)

This morning, I watched a movie on Netflix titled "Steel Rain", in which a North Korean military coup happened, its leader (name never mentioned, but definitely Kim Jong Un) was injured and a nuclear war between North and South Korea almost happened. Anyway, in the end, North Korea declared peace with South Korea by giving them half of their nuclear weapons, acting as a fail-safe and preventing nuclear war from ever being a risk. And I suddenly thought of how this would be impossible in real life. Here is the reason why.

It is because the nuclear threat from North Korea ensures that there is even a North Korea in the first place. If you think about it, if North Korea didn't have 50 nuclear missiles that can be launched to China, South Korea or Japan at a moment's notice, it would not be dangerous anymore. North Korea thus would lose its superiority and relevance, leaving it to be easily annexed by the South Korean and American forces, or possibly even the Chinese government. For Kim Jong Un, who wants absolute power maintained in his hands, peace is therefore not an option.

Therefore, we will still be in danger of North Korean nukes hitting us as long as Kim Jong Un rules (though people say that he will not actually fire the missiles, only using them to create tension).

Now, as mentioned in the title, I will also talk about why North Korea, despite having a crippled economy, will never go capitalist. (Capitalism is the practice of people being able to start their own businesses and expand without interference from the government, for those who do not know.)

This reason also has to do with Kim Jong Un maintaining power. Currently, the majority of North Korea's citizens are in poverty and malnourished. If the North Korean government started capitalism, businesses would open up to the rest of the world. When they see how developed countries like South Korea or the US are far ahead of them, North Korea's citizens would have ambitions to make their country a better place, which would require getting rid of the power holder, Kim Jong Un. As many more people would become wealthy too, they would not need to worry about starving and instead focus on overthrowing the government. In fact, the former leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Il, utilised the 1991 famines to prevent his citizens from ever thinking about a coup. This is the ulterior motive behind North Korea's notorious isolation from the rest of the world, which includes banning all non-North Korean entertainment and sending offenders to concentration camps.

In conclusion, North Korea will always be a communist, poor, nuclear-weaponised country, simply for the absolute rule of Kim Jong Un and his decendants.
