All About the New Covid-19 Subvariant

Recently, people have been infected in several countries, including 1 imported case here in Singapore, by the AY. 4.2 Delta variant, also known as the Delta Plus variant. We will see whether this new subvariant is a cause of concern for us.

The Delta Plus variant is a mutation of the original Delta variant, consisting of a spike mutation. Thankfully, experts have said that the new variant is only slightly more transmissible and equally dangerous compared to the Delta variant itself, but tests are still ongoing. It is also classified by the WHO as a variant of interest, but not a variant of concern.

There have also been relatively few cases of this subvariant, with Australia and Japan reporting only 1 case each, the US reporting 7 and Canada reporting 6.

So for now, there is no need to really panic as the Delta Plus variant will probably not be much worse than the Delta variant we have learnt to live with.
