Dedicated to Teachers of the World: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future

I walked along the corridor of the staff room, new year, new school and new teachers. Did I ever expect anything? Probably not... It was a day to Teacher’s Day celebration and as I prepared the cards, I felt quite proud of most of my teachers.

To all Teachers of the world:

Leading us through days, weeks, months and years, through the pandemic crisis as you try to still continue developing our future. It is truly not easy, thank you so much.

I walk through the school freely and greeting a teacher on the way. With my backpack on my back, I proceeded to class 1G. How much effort have they put in to mark your work, help you you revise and set your exam papers.

While you only do one worksheet, a teacher has to mark at least 30 worksheets. Teachers do not know everything but they are definitely knowledgeable.

Although you only worked with, markers, a whiteboard and a red pen, you brought enlightenment to my life.

A Teacher’s Wish Along the corridors,

And near the classrooms,

A burly figure walks past,

Nodding his head.

Students flood out of school,

The figure does follows suit,

With disappointment expressed.

Wrong as it was to do it,

He shook his head.

Peeking his head through,

He witnessed a saddening sight.

Entering with disappointment instead of fury,

He stated his wish to the junior he saw.

The junior proceeded with his actions,

Only to be stopped once again.

Took something,

Return nothing,

Giving anything,

Trying to stop something.

The figure stated his wish again…

Never to scold but to teach,

Love but never to hate,

Nail the job but not abuse the role,

Help rather than abandon.

His words were heard but not recognised,

Yet tears were welling,

Mental pain.

This piece of poetry shows the pain a teacher feels upon following and witnessing a student stealing from a shop. He expresses love to all his students indirectly and states his wish: To actually be a teacher who can help his students so the students can turn over a new leaf.

Dedicated to Teachers of the world, training the world’s next successors like a burning candle, burning away its life to give light,…and warmth.
