#shorts A Mere Comeback: Bishan Chess Club 15+2 Rapid OTB Meetup Tournament

The father-son duo appeared to be distraught in Lecture Room 2 of Bishan Community Club. The father had rushed to fetch his son from home all the way to Junction 8 shopping centre and clearly, with minor eye issue. It was not serious but was definitely a big deal.

6.23pm we had entered and after just one round of tournament and a few sips of water, the situation, clearly was apparent in their eyes.

A Swiss man towered over the father with the careless loss of two rooks on the chessboard while the son accepted the defeat against the founder of the club, who did not give the point as the son’s opponent wasn’t here and he was just joining in the fun?

Round 2, a terribly bloody scene from a person who had settled in for a draw, who seemed to be the underdog, was playing the son. Equalised position, and a blunder, of course made by the son and it was lost. The son’s Round 2 opponent’s opponent from round 1, did not hesitate to grab advantage and initiative from the father, which succeeded.

Just as all hope was lost, the glimmer of hope came, and when it did come, it came fast, against another father-son duo. My father and I were found playing with a son and a father respectively and against all odds, it was double wins within minutes.

Obviously, everything comes with consequences and double trouble was awaiting in front of both, gone, with blunderful play that came with much irony.

And afterwards, it was a mere, late comeback for the father and son, the father play his son’s Round 3 opponent, beating both father and son while I won my last, with much more caution and swift, crazy play for I guess no reason at all.

2/5 was no good result but experience came with each game played and as the famous quote states.

If you wish to succeed, you must brave the risk of failure

-Former Chess Champion and Legend Garry Kasparov

See you for the next tournament! <3
