Announcing the SG Chess Festival 2022: My involvement @ Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel

It’s back again, the annual SG Chess Festival 2022, an event that stretches for a whole week, from 12 to 19 June 2022, which is also kindly sponsored by and based in the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel - Singapore

There would be many highlights during these few days, ranging from Classical, Rapid, Blitz, Chess 960, Team Tournaments to Workshops & Simultaneous Exhibitions by GMs and IMs from other countries. The biggest event being the

Grand Copthorne Waterfront Professor Lim Kok Ann Invitational GM Tournament, which is one of the little tournaments that players can play for a GM norm. (you need three to become a GM) Participants of the tournament include home-favourite and newly crowned GM Tin Jingyao, who achieved one of the biggest medal hauls in the SEA Games ever as a debutant, having gotten 1 silver medal and 2 bronze medals, who is in good form, and has just obtained his 3rd GM norm in the Hanoi 2022 Invitational tournament with 7 wins and 2 draws, scoring a shocking 8/9 in the tournament. A strong contender would be Siddharth Jagadeesh, who had recently been crowned IM after he met all the requirement, despite having lost to Jingyao in PUBXCHESS matches, he would be sure to put up a good fight to inch closer to his GM title as well. WGM Gong Qianyun, who was the medallist Gold in the Sea Games 2019 Women’s Standard event and achieved 1 silver & 1 bronze in the recent SEA Games, is also competing for norm but much competition is expected. View the full start list of players here!

Anyways, I may be volunteering at this event on 17 June 2022.

Despite poor performances in recent tournaments including the KCFAP Vesak Day Rapid Event (May 2022) & the Bishan Chess Club OTB Rapid 15+2 Meetup tournament, only garnering a 3/7 and 2/5 score respectively, which was not even over the halfway mark, my father and I would be expecting to play in one of the Team Event of the Chess Festival that will be held in the Canary Room of the hotel on 14 June 2022, a Tuesday. Details are already out and my team are as follows:

Board 1- Jovan Teo

Board 2- Wong Yip Fung

Board 3- Yeoh Ti Heong

Board 4- Yeoh Kai Bo

SG Chess Festival Website:

There would be casual play between several clubs in the Canary Room of Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel on 15 June 2022 from 6.30-9.30pm so be welcome to join in the fun.
