Creative Writing Tips Part 4: What Ideas?

Where do your ideas come from for creative writing? Even to write a story, you need to have ideas. Ideas are crucial, if you don't have them these few days, this means you are suffering from something called Writer's Block.

Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. This loss of ability to write and produce new work is not a result of commitment problems or the lack of writing skills. The condition ranges from difficulty in coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce a work for years. Writer's block is not solely measured by time passing without writing. It is measured by time passing without productivity in the task at hand.

- Wikipedia on Writer's Block

You constantly need ideas, especially if you want to write several stories. Now, the question is where do you get the ideas? You need to visit places. For example, if you have an author's mind, whenever you visit somewhere you have never been before, like a new school or a new shopping center, you can observe the surroundings and you can just write out how you feel about the place and using the Show-Not-Tell technique to describe how the place looks like.

Another way to obtain ideas is to read. Just read books, read whatever you can find, especially the ones that are fiction. They can give you ideas to start on when you are interested in the books. I read huge numbers of books and I try to read as many types as I can. I highly suggest books that continue in series and are usually thicker, like Harry Potter or The 39 Clues. Jim Murphy's books are also quite Ok for me. Once you finish this books, you will have the ideas to write a story.

Your works can also come in your experiences. If you learn a new skill, maybe swimming, any other sport, piano, you can also write about your experience. Writing stories of yourself doing something that you, in real life also does comes in the form of Personal Recount. It is good getting more ideas. You have to know that ideas can come from many sources.

Best Regards,
