History Enrichment Episode 2: The accounts of The Fall of Singapore 1.0 (1349-1398)

-The Fall of Yuan China to Ming China

Trade was prosperous in Mongol occupied China. However, it did not last long and when the country was able to finish off the Red Turban rebellion in 1368, the Mongols were weak and vulnerable , thus leading to an overthrow, causing the remnants of the Mongols to fall back to Mongolia, establishing a new dynasty, Ming China. Ming China re-established the foreign trade ban, which led to the Decline of Temasek as a port

-The 2 accounts of the Fall of Singapore

There were two accounts of the Fall of Singapura, both pointed to us falling to a foreign power though.

• Iskandar Shah and the Controversy of Infidelity

This is the first account of the Fall of Singapore by the Malay Annals. This revolves around the last king of Singapura, Iskandar Shah. An important official, Sang Rajuna Tapa, had a daughter that was so beautiful that the king was enamoured by her. However, after his other concubines spread rumours about her infidelity, Iskandar Shah flew into rage and executed Sang Rajuna Tapa’s daughter and left her body in a public place. Sang Rajuna Tapa, who seeks revenge for her daughter, writes to the Majapahit Empire.

Majapahit forces arrive in Singapura.

Singapura falls.

Iskandar Shah flees to Melaka.

•Parameswara and the Assassination of Sang Aji

The second account was by the Portuguese in the 1500s. This revolves around Sang Aji and Parameswara, who after assassing ting the Sang Aji, becomes the last king of Singapura. The king of Ayutthaya was raging and seeks revenge for Sang Aji, who was his vassal in the past.

Ayutthaya forces arrive in Singapura.

Singapura falls.

Parameswara flees to Melaka.

-The Fall of Singapore

In the two accounts, a foreign force, the Majapahit forces or the Ayutthaya forces massacred the armies who fought for their last king of Singapura. Singapura was left with bodies, though most of the citizens were left unharmed. Singapura was once again turned into a quiet and small fishing village until much later.

-The Founding of Melaka

Since the story of Parameswara is a more widely used story, we would choose to use that story. So, after Parameswara reached Melaka, he founded it and to establish it as a port, he immediately pledged allegiance to the Ming court of China, thus leading to Ming China making Melaka it’s key port-of-call. Parameswara therefore became the first king of Melaka and was successful in turning Melaka into a prosperous port. He was a hero.

Until much later...
