Success Stories 2022 Part I
Partly Fictional Story based on true events

It was a bright morning and The Good Writer had just woken up. He stretched his right arm, which felt mildly sore. It was about 7.26am. The Good Writer reluctantly walked out his room, showered and afterwards, grabbed a MILO packet (it’s very nutritious people 👍) and drank it in about 30 seconds before crushing it especially hard and threw it into the rubbish can. I took out my school PLD (Personal Learning Device) and my own acer computer. I pulled the small white table out forcefully and placed the PLD on it, turning the table diagonally towards my acer computer. “Sigh…” The Good Writer turned on both computers, PLD for Zoom meeting and acer computer for playing. He settled in for a somewhat expected disappointing day. There was absolutely no chance anyone was going to show The Good Writer mercy, neither would he.
Round, after round, after round, it went on and The Good Writer was beyond just being tired, it was more exhausting than he thought it would be. “Armed with 3 wins out of 3 games, he went for lunch break, stress still unable to be controlled. All The Good Writer could do was force a faint smile towards his supporting mother who put the plate of nutritious and yummy food. After lunch, stress and pressure got the better of The Good Writer. “Shucks!” The Good Writer shouted as he slammed his hand on the table, he blundered a rook during Round 4. “DAMN IT MY QUEEN!” The Good Writer knocked his head on the table and he lost, again. Round 6 made The Good Writer rage quit and he resigned after just 21 moves. “Screw this!” He was on a definite losing streak and pulling himself into a nose dive and if he did not win the last round, his chances of being qualified for anything would slim down to 0.1%. After resting on his bed and watching a few chess videos, The Good Writer calmed himself down for the final round.
“Oh god, I am WINNING!” “Ok I need to calm down and think properly, I cannot afford to lose a winning position…” “Wait it’s checkmate in 4…I WON! I WON MY LAST GAME TAKE THE L HIGHER-RATED PLAYERS!”
4 wins and 3 losses out of the 7 games. I slammed the screen of both computers shut and stretched my body. Now, I just had to wait for fate.

This was the message The Good Writer received, as he and his mother scrambled to click the links, they found The Good Writer’s Name in 57th place, and I qualified for the National Junior Development Squad. In addition, I noticed my name on the West Zone Top 10! I am going to receive an award!
Afterwards, The Good Writer’s parents had a talk with The Good Writer and decided to let him try out the NJDS, which was a development programme for the National Team Singapore for Chess and although it was not the cheapest, it was decided that passion would come along with talent.
On Friday, The Good Writer and his family collected the award.
I also bought the Team Singapore SCF shirt as it is required for training.
It has indeed been an enriching experience.
